The Sequoia Middle School Reefkeepers are 7th-8th grade students in Pleasant Hill, California (SF Bay Area). They are in a relatively new marine science elective class and manage the aquarium systems in Ms. Horne's science classroom.
ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Students will learn about the science of the natural coral reef ecosystem, how our closed system tank environment differs from the natural reef, the care required for aquarium organisms and the use of the equipment involved in making it possible. Students will oversee daily tasks, as well as prepare the tank for the weekend and check it after the weekend. They will also be involved in the selection of fish, corals and invertebrates to inhabit our classroom reef.

The reefkeepers will educate others about the coral reef habitat, keeping an aquarium and issues involving environmental science. Specific activities include the following:

Members will create signs to identify the organisms in the aquarium. They will conduct tours for adult and student visitors.

To celebrate Earth Day, the reefkeepers and science department will host a student art show and ocean-themed film festival on campus.

Students will take on responsibilities for maintaining this website, publicizing campus events, and working with the media production class to set up an aquarium webcam and create informative segments for the televised daily bulletin.

The reefkeepers will also keep Backup Reef patrons and materials donors up-to-date on the aquarium.
