The Sequoia Middle School Reefkeepers are 7th-8th grade students in Pleasant Hill, California (SF Bay Area - Mt. Diablo Unified School District). They are in a semester-long marine science elective class and also manage the aquarium systems in Ms. Horne's science classroom.
ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Students will learn about the science of the natural coral reef ecosystem, how our closed system tank environment differs from the natural reef, the care required for aquarium organisms and the use of the equipment involved in making it possible. Students will oversee daily tasks, as well as prepare the tank for the weekend and check it after the weekend. They will also be involved in the selection of fish, corals and invertebrates to inhabit our classroom tanks.
Students will educate others about the coral reef habitat, keeping an aquarium and issues involving environmental science. They will propagate corals, grow them out, and give them to other schools or trade with community reefkeepers.
New goals are for students to monitor and record coral growth and keep Backup Reef patrons and materials donors up-to-date on the tanks and develop procedures for future classes to continue their work.
